BURKE
COUNTY
Burke County was Georgia’s first county,
founded in 1777, and ranks as the second largest
county in the state. The county has a population
of 23,025 and encompasses a land area of 832 square
miles. It is located only 25 minutes from Augusta.
Its location provides easy access to I-20 between
Atlanta and Columbia, S.C. The new highway under
construction from Augusta to the port city of Savannah
runs through Burke County.
ECONOMY
Burke County has one of the lowest millage rates
in the state of Georgia. The millage in the unincorporated
area is $18.69. Companies such as Kwikset (Division
of Black & Decker), Helmac, FIAMM, Perfection-Schwank
and Samson Manufacturing find Burke County an excellent
place to do business because of the low property
taxes. Burke County is also home to Georgia Power’s
Plant Vogtel, which is one of the safest and most
effective nuclear power plants in the world.
The
per capita income for 2000 is $20,786: the median
household income at $36,847. The median home price
of $71,000.
The
economy has also seen growth in manufacturing. There
were several new businesses that located to Burke
County, companies such as Helmac Products Corporation
and FIAMM; total investment of over $40 million..

SHOPPING
AND RETAIL ACTIVITY
According to Sales and Marketing Management magazine’s
2001 Survey of Buying Power, total retail sales
in Burke County’s shopping centers averaged
$142 million, with a total effective buying income
of $234 million. This variance provides ample room
for supporting additional retail locations in the
area.
SCHOOLS
TThere are 6 public schools in Burke County. Total
enrollment for 2000-2001 was 4,754 students. There
are two private schools with the enrollment of 503
students.
In
May 2000, the new Augusta Tech Campus opened with
over 200 students.
