Edgefield County council consists of elected representatives from five single-member districts. All council members serve two-year terms. Edgefield County employs the Council-Administrator form of government. The County Council determines policies that are implemented under the direction of an appointed County Administrator.

SCHOOLS
There are 4 elementary, 2 middle and 1 high school in the county. Total enrollment for 2000-2001 was 3,917. The district has just completed one phase of a five-year building program. Merriwether Elementary and Douglas Elementary schools have had classroom expansions completed. In the second phase of expansion is, Johnston Elementary, W.E. Parker Elementary and Johnston-Edgefield Trenton Middle Schools. One private school, Francis Hugh Wardlaw Academy, with a student.

SEWER
The County does offer sewer service, and treats sewer through five counties, Trenton, Johnston, North Augusta, Edgefield and Aiken Public Authority.

WATER
Water service is provided by Edgefield County Water and Sewer Authority. The water of the County is drawn from pristine stream systems, the Savannah River and deep rock wells that tap a vast aquifer and require very little treatment.

• Combined, average excess demand is 5.5 mgd.

ELECTRICITY & GAS

Electricity & gas is provided by Aiken Electric Cooperative and South Carolina Electric & Gas Company and South Carolina Pipeline Corporation.
