RICHMOND
COUNTY
Augusta was founded in 1736. Richmond County
was formed in 1777 and named for the Duke of Richmond,
a British defender of the colonists' cause. In January
1996 Augusta and Richmond County consolidated the
city and county governments. Richmond County has
an estimated 199,775 residents and encompasses a
land area of 324 square miles.
ECONOMY
The health care industry and manufacturers are the
largest employers in Richmond County, according
to the Georgia Department of Labor. Employers like
E-Z-GO Division Textron, Inc., International Paper,
Thermal Ceramics, Kendall Company, Medical College
of Georgia, University Hospital, VA Hospital and
Gracewood School and Hospital employ a large percentage
of the workforce in Richmond County.
Services,
followed by retail trade are the county's largest
employment sectors. There has been growth in the
motel/hotel construction, with more than 3 new hotels
in the Richmond County area. The economy has also
seen growth in the industrial and service sectors.
New and Expanding industries such as Sitel, Murray
Biscuit, and Boral Bricks have invested over $41
million in the community.

AND RETAIL ACTIVITY
According
to Sales & Marketing Management magazine’s
2001 Survey of Buying Power, total retail sales
in Richmond County’s mall and more than 50
shopping centers averaged more than $3.1 billion,
with a total effective buying income of $2.7 billion.
This variance provides ample room for supporting
additional retail locations in the area.
