Augusta has the proud distinction of being home to 1999 National Teacher of the Year, Andrew C. Baumgartner, a kindergarten teacher at Richmond County's A. Brian Merry Elementary School. He will serve as an education ambassador for the year 2000, touring the country and touting the importance of education.
