Chamber Working to Develop More Effective Statewide Economic Incentives

Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce President Jim West and Columbia County Chamber of Commerce Bryan Quinsey are working with state officials to create an incentive program similar to those now used in other Southeastern states for Georgia's second tier communities. The model for the proposed program, dubbed the Rural Georgia Jobs Development Act (RGJDA), is a program developed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in the early 1990s. West and Quinsey have extensive knowledge of the Kentucky program from their previous work in that state.

The Rural Georgia Jobs Development Act picked up strong allies in recent weeks. The proposal has been endorsed by the staff of the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism, and the chairs of GDITT’s executive committee and economic development committee, and will be presented for full board approval later this summer. The chairman of GDITT will present the proposed legislation to Georgia Governor Barnes for endorsement and pre-filing prior to the 2002 General Assembly session.

2001 Total Resource Development Campaign Is Moving Toward Goal
The 2001 Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce Resource Development Campaign, chaired by Pierce Blanchard, Jr., Executive Vice President of Georgia Bank and Trust, is well on its way to achieving its goal of $280,000 in memberships, sponsorships and trades, but to be successful, the chamber needs your help. There are still several sponsorship opportunities available for the 2002 slate of programs. For more information, or to recommend a business for chamber membership, contact the Membership Department at 821-1300.
