Columbia County Chamber Welcomes Julie Mills as New Project Manager Expansions on the Horizon

The Columbia County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome Julie Mills, who recently joined the staff as economic development project manager of the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce.

Mills, a former resident of Watkinsville, is a 2000 graduate of the University of Georgia. She is presently completing her coursework to obtain her masters degree in human resources and organizational development.

Mills, who joined the Chamber on May 21, is responsible for the formation, development and implementation of a new existing business and industry program. She also serves as a liaison with governmental units pertaining to issues and concerns of business and industry. Additionally, she will serve as a project manager for the Development Authority of Columbia County.

Expansions On the Horizon

Augusta's Rail Options
Chamber Investigates

The Chamber has been working to increase Augusta’s transportation opportunities on two fronts: through communications with Amtrak, including a recent visit by the company, and a meeting with a group supporting statewide rail service.

To show support for the recent Amtrak visit, the Chamber created and distributed a sample letter to members, encouraging them to personalize and send it to the Mayor’s office. This successful effort resulted in a large quantity of letters that the mayor was able to present to Amtrak during their visit. The Chamber was also represented at several of the stops during the day.

In addition to working with Amtrak, the Chamber is participating in a statewide group that is supporting and fine-tuning efforts to create a rail network across Georgia. Currently, these plans place Augusta near the bottom of the list for completion. The Chamber is working to make sure that a rail connection to Augusta is finished as soon as is practical and that the needs of areas outside of Metro Atlanta are addressed.

The AMCC continues to focus on the importance of transportation issues for the economic development health of our community. The availability of rail service should be investigated as a potential means for connecting Metro Augusta with other places across the state and nation.
