In
June of this year, 94 middle and high school
teachers from Burke, Columbia, Lincoln, McDuffie
and Richmond counties participated in a two-day
work experience at local businesses as part
of the School to Work Partnership's program.
Thirty-seven area businesses each hosted from
one to five educators. Businesses indicated
their willingness to participate by responding
to a Chamber mailing, as well as by being
involved in other Partnership activities.
The
experience provided an opportunity for the
teachers to understand the hiring practices
of area businesses and to compare the skills
they are teaching in the classroom with skills
actually needed in the workplace. Some of
the responses from teachers who participated
included:
"I
now possess another avenue of information
and can pass that info to my students who
like myself, have very limited knowledge of
what actually goes on in this line of work.
"It
is important for students to understand a
positive attitude toward customers.
"The
employees looked at problems as a challenge.
This made me more aware of the importance
of teaching my students cooperative learning
skills."
