
A
luncheon was held on September 11 at The
Pinnacle Club to garner support for the
second annual Augusta Award. Speakers included
Doug Barnard, Jr., Chairman of the Augusta
Award committee, who discussed the significance
of the award, first award recipient Dr.
Justine Washington, R. Lee Smith, Jr. with
the CSRA Community Foundation and Mayor
Bob Young.
The assembled group of media, committee
members and guests were invited to spread
the word throughout the community to nominate
someone as the 2001 recipient of The Augusta
Award, given as recognition of a lifetime
of service to the Augusta metro community.
The
Augusta Award is a civic honor created in
the year 2000 to recognize individuals of
exemplary character who have made a significant
contribution to the progress, harmony or
quality of life within the community.

The
award is jointly sponsored by the Augusta
Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Central
Savannah River Area Community Foundation,
Inc. Media Sponsor for the 2001 Augusta Award
is WAGT-TV 26. The honor is bestowed based
upon the following criteria:
1. The recipient shall be a current or former
resident of Metropolitan Augusta.
2.
The recipient shall have demonstrated strong
evidence of personal, business or professional
achievement.
3.
The recipient shall have demonstrated strong
evidence of community involvement, commitment,
leadership and service.
4.
The recipients contribution to the community
must be measurable in terms of economic or
social progress; improved unity, tolerance
or collaboration among the citizens; or overall
improvement in the quality of life for a significant
population, as determined by the panel of
judges
Nomination
forms, as well as the award criteria, are
available by visiting the Augusta Metro Chamber

and clicking on the News link, and can also
be picked up from the Augusta Metro or Columbia
County Chambers of Commerce offices through
October 31.
The
Augusta Award, bestowed for the first time
in 2000 to Drs. Justine and Ike Washington,
hopes to recognize and award those who have
given a lifetime of service to bettering our
community.

The
next Business@Breakfast meeting, held October
9 at the Augusta Country Club, will be a special
opportunity for
the Chambers Existing Business and Industry
Committee to
recognize the areas primary existing industries
with awards honoring outstanding accomplishments.
Nancy Ball, chair of the Existing Business and
Industry Committee, named Bill Hughes of Kennametal
Industrial Products Group the chair of a sub-committee,
which established the awards. The committees
goals are to recognize the industries for their
accomplishments in a variety of categories over
the past eighteen months. The categories of
recognition include:
Site beautification
Participation in the Adopt-A-Road/Street
Program
Efforts to improve the environment
Community involvement
Workforce retention

Workforce continuing education programs
Low on-the-job injury rates
New and expanding companies
Innovation in technology
Importing/exporting.
Many
community leaders will be on hand to present
awards, including: Mayor Bob Young, Columbia
County Chairman Barry Fleming, Augusta Metro
Chamber Chairman Ed Tarver, and Columbia County
Chair Linda Crowell.
