Chamber Launches Second Augusta Award Search

A luncheon was held on September 11 at The Pinnacle Club to garner support for the second annual Augusta Award. Speakers included Doug Barnard, Jr., Chairman of the Augusta Award committee, who discussed the significance of the award, first award recipient Dr. Justine Washington, R. Lee Smith, Jr. with the CSRA Community Foundation and Mayor Bob Young.

The assembled group of media, committee members and guests were invited to spread the word throughout the community to nominate someone as the 2001 recipient of The Augusta Award, given as recognition of a lifetime of service to the Augusta metro community.

The Augusta Award is a civic honor created in the year 2000 to recognize individuals of exemplary character who have made a significant contribution to the progress, harmony or quality of life within the community.

The award is jointly sponsored by the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Central Savannah River Area Community Foundation, Inc. Media Sponsor for the 2001 Augusta Award is WAGT-TV 26. The honor is bestowed based upon the following criteria:

1. The recipient shall be a current or former resident of Metropolitan Augusta.

2. The recipient shall have demonstrated strong evidence of personal, business or professional achievement.

3. The recipient shall have demonstrated strong evidence of community involvement, commitment, leadership and service.

4. The recipient’s contribution to the community must be measurable in terms of economic or social progress; improved unity, tolerance or collaboration among the citizens; or overall improvement in the quality of life for a significant population, as determined by the panel of judges

Nomination forms, as well as the award criteria, are available by visiting the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce Website, www.augustagausa.com, and clicking on the News link, and can also be picked up from the Augusta Metro or Columbia County Chambers of Commerce offices through October 31.

The Augusta Award, bestowed for the first time in 2000 to Drs. Justine and Ike Washington, hopes to recognize and award those who have given a lifetime of service to bettering our community.
