RAIL
& DEEP WATER TRANSPORTATION
The Augusta-Aiken MSA is serviced by two major
railroads - CSX and Norfolk Southern. CSX offers
rail service to Columbia and Richmond Counties.
Norfolk Southern offers rail service to Richmond
and Burke counties. Intermodal service, reciprocal
switching, transit privileges, pickup and delivery
are available from each company.

DEEP
WATER PORT
Savannah
Port Facilities:
The
865-acre Garden City Terminal is a container port,
the largest and most versatile facility operated
by the Georgia Ports Authority. This modern complex
features six contiguous berths, nine 45-ton container
cranes and 25 interchange gates. The Garden City
terminal also handles liquid and dry bulk cargoes,
"Ro-Ro" and conventional breakbulk cargoes.
Over 1.5 million square feet of indoor space is
leased to various port tenants for warehousing,
distribution, stuffing and stripping, assembly/breakdown,
export packing and fabricating.

The
220-acre Ocean Terminal is Georgia Ports Authority's
breakbulk activity center and includes 15 warehouses
and transit sheds which support 10 berths for cargoes
such as kaolin clay, steel and linerboard. One 45-ton
container crane and five gantry cranes with up to
175-ton capacity can accommodate a variety of cargoes.

Charleston
Port Facilities:
The Ports Authority's four Charleston terminals
are Union Pier Terminal, Columbus Street Terminal,
Wando Welch Terminal and North Charleston Terminal.
The entrance channel to Charleston harbor is 42
feet deep, while all inner channels, berths and
turning basins are maintained at 40 feet mean low
water. Harbor deepening to 45 feet mean low water
began in 1998 and the Port is constructing new terminal
facilities on Daniel Island.
BUS
TRANSPORTATION
The Augusta Transit Authority provides public
transportation for the commuting public. The system
services virtually all of the former city limits,
as well as 16 routes in Richmond and Columbia Counties.
In 1998 the Augusta Transit Authority served over
1.3 million passengers. It provides service six
days a week from 5:45 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Southeastern
Stages, Inc., Lewis Bus Line, and Dutch-Boy Motor
Coach, Inc. provides scheduled and/or charter service.
